Herbal Pastilles

Herbal Pastilles

Homemade herbal pastilles are so simple to make & the options of herbal combinations are endless! You can make these with powdered herbs & honey.

I find rolling them into shape is very meditative and soothing as well.

This blend was specific for supporting sore throat, cough, congestion, inflammation, soothing & mild anti spasmodic action etc. The ginger may be a bit too spicy for little ones - so you can easily omit that.

Pastilles are such nice support for this - but it can also be so nice to make blends for the nervous system such as lemonbalm, lavender, rose & reishi etc! Or a digestive blend with herbs like fennel & catnip. Making ginger pastilles for newly pregnant mamas would be such a nice gift also

These are wonderful to have on hand when out and about and especially for travel. I think they make really special gifts as well

These are so fun to make with your children as well - although I suspect under 3 they would try to eat it all before making it into pastilles

If you dry these well - they should last for several months in a cool dark place

RECIPE

I will share the recipe for this exact batch- however you can change your herbs out depending on what you are wanting to use them for ! Or if you don’t have something on hand you can replace with other herbs. (Or use only a couple of herbs) If you don’t want to make these into pastilles you can choose to make it into an electuary as well - which is a honey and powdered herbs paste (to be taken on it’s own or added to hot water or milk) just add a little bit of extra honey for this option

Ingredients:

  • 2 heaping tablespoons gently warmed unpasteurized honey

  • 5 teaspoons marshmallow root powder

  • 1 teaspoon sage powder

  • 1 teaspoon Rosehip powder

  • 3 teaspoons Rose powder (extra for rolling)

  • 1 teaspoon rosemary powder

  • 1 teaspoon licorice root powder

  • 1 teaspoon chamomile powder

  • 2 teaspoons ginger powder

  • A couple dropper fulls tincture of choice (optional)

  • Parchment paper

Method:
  1. Gathering your herbs and setting up your space for medicine making

  2. I prefer to powder the herbs myself in my blender - but you can purchase powdered herbs also ! Marshmallow root can be nice to purchase already powdered as it is the more difficult one to grind into a fine powder, and quite fibrous. You can also use a mortar and pestle.

  3. Mixing your powdered herbs of choice together in a bowl

  4. Warming your honey slightly so it is easier to work with - pouring on top of your herbs

  5. Mixing well until it is a doughy consistency (you may have to add a little bit more herbs here)

  6. Try rolling a small amount in your palms - it will still be a bit sticky but should form a ball with ease. You only need a very small amount !

  7. Once you have finished rolling them into balls - sprinkling some rose powder onto a surface or plate- rolling your pastilles in the rose powder (or other herb powder)

  8. At this point you can also choose to press them down into little rounds

  9. Placing on parchment paper in a safe spot - allowing to dry fully for 2-3 days depending on your climate

  10. Storing in a jar in a cool dark spot & enjoy !!
